The UK's beauty industry is valued at 20 billion pounds, and British Beauty Week (26th – 30th October) celebrates the success of local beauty brands. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is seizing this opportunity to urge jobseekers to consider the wide array of roles available in the sector. With over 4,000 job openings listed on the Government’s Find a Job portal, positions range from beauticians to merchandisers and offer opportunities for individuals with diverse levels of experience.
Recognizing the significance of the beauty industry, the Prime Minister has commended it as a prime example of British business prowess. Contributing 20 billion pounds annually to the UK economy, the sector is a key focus of the government's economic growth strategy. Diane Whitbread, an Employer Engagement Advisor at the DWP, encourages jobseekers to explore career paths within the beauty industry during British Beauty Week. She emphasizes the sector's growth potential, exciting roles, skill development opportunities, and prospects for career advancement.
Jobcentres across the UK are actively collaborating with employers to promote and fill beauty-related vacancies, including positions at Elite Hotels, which owns three upscale hotels in the South of England. Through partnerships with organizations like the British Beauty Council, the government is committed to fostering excellence within the industry. Established in 2018, the council serves as a champion for the sector, offering financial support and guidance to workers.
Millie Kendal OBE, CEO of the British Beauty Council, underscored the industry's substantial contribution to the UK's GDP, surpassing that of the creative, arts, and entertainment sector, as well as aerospace manufacturing. Despite this, many remain unaware of the diverse career opportunities available in the beauty sector. Kendal highlighted the council's 'Future Talent Programme', aimed at introducing individuals aged 11-18 to unique roles in technology, fragrance, sustainability, and cosmetic science through engaging short films. The initiative is dedicated to nurturing a pipeline of creative and entrepreneurial talent for the sector.
